Maim is a free and open source tool that can be used to take screenshots of your desktop. Maim allows for a lot of unique and interesting functionalities. It is very useful tool comparing to scrot and other tools. Maim comes with lots of features, some of them are listed below:
- Take screenshots of your desktop, and saves it in png or jpg format.
- Allow us to take screenshots in predetermined regions or windows.
- Allow us to manually select a region, or window, before taking a screenshot on the fly.
- Debian 9 desktop install on your system.
- A normal user with sudo privileges.
Before starting, you will need to install some required packages to your system. You can install all of them with the following command:
sudo apt-get install xclip xdotool -y
After installing above packages, you will also need to install slop to your system. Slop is an application that queries for a selection from us and prints the region to stdout.
You can install slop with maim by running the following command:
sudo apt-get install slop maim -y
Working with Maim
Now maim is installed on your system. Let's see some example of maim command.
Run maim command without any arguments takes a screenshot of your desktop and save it to your home directory.
Run maim command with test.png argument takes a screenshot of your desktop and save it as test.png.
The following command takes a screenshot of your current window and saves it as active-window.png
maim -i $(xdotool getactivewindow) active-window.png
The following command takes a screenshot of your desktop and saves it by date.
maim ~/$(date +%F-%T).png
The following command will allow you to select an area on your screen, then copy the selection to your clipboard. You can use this command to post images in gimp or other imaging application.
maim -s | xclip -selection clipboard -t image/png
Finally, you have successfully installed maim to your Debian 9 desktop. You can now easily takes a screenshot of your desktop using maim. Maim is very useful utility overcome shortcomings of scrot and performs better in several ways.
