Install Debian 8.0 Jessie On Your Computer
Many geeks find the installation of debian a bit hard so I thought to share this simple installation guide with you guys. First download the iso image from the official website. Once the download is finished follow each step of this guide in order to get a successful installation on your computer.
You can either make a bootable usb stick or burn the iso to a cd. Because I am going to test the installation in a virtualbox I don't have to do such things.
Select Graphical Install and then press Enter.
Select a language you want to be used for the installation process. Since I am writing this article in english language it is normal for me to leave this option as default.
Now select a location for the time zone.
Once selected do not forget to click on Continue.
Then choose the keymap to use. I prefer American English.
Click on Continue. The installer components from the CD will be loaded.
It is time to configure the network. Enter a hostname for your system. I am leaving it as default.
Leave the following black and click on Continue.
Now you need to setup the password for the root user. It is important to keep in mind that the password for this kind of user should be very strong as it is the system administrative account.
I have created my password for the root user as shown below.
Click on Continue. Once you have finished creating the password for the root account you will be presented to setup a normal user account like shown below.
Enter the fullname for the new user.
Set a username.
Then create a good password for this user.
I have created mine like shown below.
Configure the clock.
Time for partitioning the disk. Leave this as default.
Now make sure you know what you are doing as all the data in the selected disk will be erased.
Select the scheme you want to be used for the partitioning of the disk. Leave it as default if you are new to this.
Select Finish paritioning and write changes to the disk. Then click on Continue.
Select Yes and click on Continue.
Configure the package manager. It is recommended to select a mirror that is close to your network as you will get fast downloads.
Leave this blank for this installation.
As you can see from the above screenshots everything seems pretty easy. Once all this is finished you have to select the software you want to install on your new debian machine.
I would like to add Gnome.
Then wait for the installation of the software.
Install the GRUB boot loader.
Login to the user account you created.
Search for a terminal because we gonna need it.
Top Things To Do After Installing Debian
sudo is not installed by default on debian systems the way it is on Ubuntu. The apt-get command can be used to install sudo on our debian system.
First run the following command to become the root user.
Then install sudo like shown below.
apt-get install sudo
Once the installation is finished you need to add the user in the sudoers file in order to grant the right to run commands with sudo.
Add user to the sudo group.
adduser oltjano sudo
Then grant sudo permissions to your username. The following commands will do that for you.
Add the following line to the end of the file.
oltjano ALL = (ALL) ALL
Make sure to replace oltjano with your username. Then save the file and you are good to go.
Install Google Chrome
Debian 8.0 Jessie comes with Iceweasel web browser which is really fast and lightweight but I prefer Google Chrome for a better web browsing experience.
First go and download Google Chrome package for debian in the official page. Just google it and the results will come up.
Once the .deb package is downloaded use the following command to install it.
sudo dpkg -i google-chrome*
In case you run on dependency errors just run the following command. I am very sure it will fix the errors and install Google Chrome for you.
sudo apt-get install -f
Install vlc Media Player
I want to watch some movies on my debian machine. Also play some music. I prefer to use vlc media player for that. So open a new terminal and run the following command to install vlc on your debian system.
sudo apt-get install vlc
shotwell is a great application I use on Ubuntu to import digital images from my camera. It can be insalled on debian too.
