How to Install Discord on Ubuntu/Arch Linux

The Internet offers some communication tools which can are able to satisfy the different users that we are. You can use these applications to send email, for text, video, chat, etc. There are multiples tools but you will naturally search a specific tool depending on the activities that you do. This is why a gamer will use a specific tool such as discord to chat with the other people who play the same game as him. In this article, we will show you how to install discord on some Linux distribution for text and voice chat.

Understand the role of discord

Discord is a text and voice chat tool which allow you to communicate with some others people who might be playing the same game as you. It is a wildly popular chat application for gamers. It has the particularity to be easy to use and well supported across all platforms. This application provides voice and text chat for groups, with an emphasis on the fact that voice comms in are always activated so that you can talk to anyone at any time as long as they are in the same voice channel as you.

1) Install discord

Discord is supported by some platforms and Linux distributions. It needs libc++1 to be installed in order to work properly.

Install on Arch Linux 2017.11.01

Discord is not present on the Arch Linux repo. So we will install it via yaourt which will help us by installing also the missing dependencies during the process

# yaourt -S discord
==> Downloading discord PKGBUILD from AUR...
........................
........................
==> Continue building discord ? [Y/n]
==> ---------------------------------
==> y                      

You can face an error about public key signature which can force you to abort the process. You don't need to delete the dependencies which have been downloaded earlier. You can resolve the public key error as below:

$ gpg --recv-keys 0FC3042E345AD05D

replace 0FC3042E345AD05D with your key. You can relaunch the installation which will continue

==> Continue installing discord ? [Y/n]
==> [v]iew package contents [c]heck package with namcap
==> ---------------------------------------------------

Install on Ubuntu 16.04

You can download the deb package to install discord on Ubuntu

# wget https://dl.discordapp.net/apps/linux/0.0.2/discord-0.0.2.deb

Now you can install it

# dpkg -i /path/to/discord-0.0.2.deb
(Reading database ... 412410 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack .../Down Chrome/discord-0.0.2.deb ...
Unpacking discord (0.0.2) over (0.0.2) ...
Setting up discord (0.0.2) ...
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.22-1ubuntu5.1) ...
Processing triggers for gnome-menus (3.13.3-6ubuntu3.1) ...
Processing triggers for mime-support (3.59ubuntu1) ...

If you some dependencies errors, you can use the command below:

# apt install -f

Then you can retry to install the discord package and enjoy it

2) Launch discord

Now you can launch discord graphically

You will need to create an account or you can use an existing account if you have one


Now you have a welcome message

You have to create your server to have access to free voice and text chat. You will use it to connect with your friends.

 

Now you can enjoy and start using discord
