Proxmox VE is a complete open source server virtualization management solution. It is based on KVM virtualization and container based virtualization and manages virtual machines, storage, virtualized networks, and HA Clustering.

The enterprise class features and the intuitive web interface are designed to help you increase the use of your existing resources and reduce hardware cost and administrating time - in business as well as home use. You can easily virtualize even the most demanding Linux and Windows application workloads.

Install Proxmox VE 3.4

First download the iso image from the official website. Once the download is finished follow each step of this guide in order to get a successful installation on your server or computer. You can either make a bootable usb stick or burn the iso to a cd/dvd.

Remember that recommended hardware system requirements:

  • Dual or Quad Socket Server (Quad/Six/Hexa Core CPUs')
  • CPU: 64bit (Intel EMT64 or AMD64)
  • Intel VT/AMD-V capable CPU/Mainboard (for KVM Full Virtualization support)
  • 8 GB RAM is good, more is better (grab as much as possible)
  • Hardware RAID with batteries protected write cache (BBU) or flash protection
  • Fast hard drives, best results with 15k rpm SAS, Raid10
  • Two Gbit NIC (for bonding), additional NIC´s depending on the preferred storage technology and cluster setup
  • Fencing hardware (only needed for HA)

Because proxmox using a SSL, you must type https, no http. https://192.168.200.82:8006

Proxmox use 8006 for the port number, so add the port number after the IP address or domain.

If you have a domain/subdomain already pointed to the IP, you can use it, here I use my subdomain pve.tuxcyber.com so the full url is https://pve.tuxcyber.com:8006 and I use chrome for the browser.

You will warned because the ssl cert is invalid, press Advanced and then Processed to pve.tuxcyber.com (unsafe).

Conclusion

Installation of Proxmox is much like other Linux distribution, because it is based on Debian Linux. After this, you can create VM inside Proxmox machine, Container, and other feature of that. I use proxmox for the small service already, chat, snmp monitoring, ftp, etc.
